Photos: FHSAA Competitive Cheerleading

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — On Saturday, I covered FHSAA Region 4 competitive cheerleading at Dillard High School.

I learned a few things:

  1. Acrophobia and trust issues are not permitted.
  2. Nothing is more frighteningly funny than hundreds of cheerleaders passionately singing along to Taylor Swift’s “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.”
  3. Much like gymnastics and figure skating, cheerleading is a one-and-done deal. Instead of nine innings or three sets, you only get one routine to wow judges. The disappointed faces after missed stunts can be heartbreaking, especially after so much optimism and positivity.
  4. Take whatever preconceived ideas about cheerleading you may have and throw them out the window. Competitive cheerleading requires flexibility, flips, timing and strength. Only the strong could lift a teammate up and keep her there!
