Photos: Team Venezuela before World Baseball Classic

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — I consider the World Baseball Classic to be a two-week-long All-Star game when Major League Baseball’s top players find themselves on the same team for country pride and bragging rights.

Baseball is no longer in the Olympics, so this is the closest thing to a gold medal or soccer’s World Cup.

Video gamers probably create teams that include American League MVP Miguel Cabrera, World Series champion Pablo Sandoval and Rockies All-Star outfielder Carlos Gonzalez. Over the next two weeks, that’s Team Venezuela — one of the most formidable lineups around.

Below are some photos I captured before Venezuela’s game against the Mets Wednesday at Tradition Field.
